Toilet shredders

Shredders for toilets

Many people are familiar with the problem of clogged sewage systems. In some homes it is poorly designed initially, worn out over time, and sometimes people themselves forget about the basic rules of use of the toilet, dumping there all kinds of garbage, household waste. To avoid encountering flooding and feces coming out, today it is proposed to install chopper pumps, which are also called fecal or sewage pumps. Let's talk about them in more detail.

Shredder for your bathroom toilet

Purpose

The pump-shredder is a box with a pump inside. It is mounted behind the cistern and is often lined with drywall or linings to hide it from view. This allows you to not disturb the aesthetics of the room. To work the device requires a connection to the toilet bowl and an electrical outlet.

The scheme of operation of the device is as follows:

  1. The effluent enters the shredder box, where the thick fractions are retained, and the water goes further;
  2. When a certain volume is accumulated, the motor starts automatically, which launches the shredder's blades;
  3. The blade grinds up the solid waste and, under pressure, drains it into the sewer system pipes;
  4. The processed waste goes into the sewer through the outlets. Usually their diameter is about 45 mm.

Advantages

Among the main advantages that such devices have, we can distinguish:

  • Effectively drains all waste, prevents the formation of clogs;
  • The box itself has an attractive design, which often allows you to make it an important element of the interior;
  • The price today is quite attractive, it does not require large expenses for purchase and installation;
  • Minimally consumes water, so fear of a sharp jump in utility bills is not necessary;
  • With proper installation does not violate the design of the room, because it is hidden behind the trim;

Disadvantages

Along with the positive aspects, shredders are characterized by certain disadvantages:

  • Old devices emit quite a lot of noise, which can irritate some people. Although modern devices are devoid of such a disadvantage;
  • Affordability does not say that the shredder costs pennies. So a certain amount of money will have to be invested, as well as spend money on the performance of cladding to close the box;
  • If you purchased a shredder of dubious manufacture, you should not count on long and trouble-free operation. Trust only trusted companies;
  • The device consumes electricity. Not much, but it will slightly affect your budget.

Characteristics

When choosing a faecal shredder for the toilet, it is necessary to take into account the main characteristics. This will allow you to find the best option specifically for your toilet:

  1. Range of delivery of waste. The power of the pump is chosen on the basis of the distance of the gravity pipe from your toilet. The standard device transports the effluent for 100 meters in the horizontal plane and 10 meters vertically. As practice shows, these figures are sufficient.
  2. To the pump connects several devices if necessary - a sink, a bathtub, a bidet. Think about whether you need it. Some people buy separate grinders for each plumbing fixture. This is an unnecessary waste of money. A combination pump will perfectly cope with all appliances alone. But if there are really a lot of devices, then you will need two pumps - for cold faecal drains and hot clean drains (sink, bathtub, bidet).
  3. The temperature of the transported liquids. Usually it is 40-90 degrees Celsius. If you only connect the pump to the toilet, the lowest temperature is enough. Shredders for cubicles, bathtubs, showers will require a 90-degree shredder. Otherwise, the device under the cold drains will not withstand such heat and will fail.

Types

Variety of sewage shredder pumps is determined not only by technical characteristics, but also by the depth of installation. There are distinguished:

  • Submersible. Their functionality is wide, as they not only divert water from the toilet, but also pump out water during floods, downpours. Some use them to water the vegetable garden. The casing is created taking into account its location in a corrosive environment, so the main elements are made of cast iron and stainless steel.
  • Semisubmersible. They are immersed inside the tank to be cleaned. Must observe an important rule during installation - the pump component of the structure must be in the waste water, and the motor - on the surface. Semi-submersible pumps have a pipe diameter of up to 15 mm, and there are also restrictions on the size of the processed solids.
  • Surface pumps. They are mounted at the edge of the effluent tank, and a hose submerged inside pumps out the waste. They are compact, easy-to-move pumps that are easy to mount from place to place.

Pumps are also classified based on water temperature and the presence or presence of a macerator in the design.

Toilet shredder device

For cold wastewater.

Two classes are distinguished:

  1. Without a chopper. They can be connected to several plumbing fixtures whose effluent temperature does not exceed 40 degrees. But you have to be careful what kind of waste goes into the system.
  2. With a shredder. Mounted behind the toilet. When a certain amount of waste accumulates, the shredder turns on and chops it, then takes it to the sewer.

For hot wastewater.

There are also two classes:

  1. Without a shredder. Perform several tasks simultaneously - are connected to the washing machine, dishwasher, takes the waste from the bathroom and sink.
  2. With shredder. Easily process waste, which temperature is 90-95 degrees, as well as chop solid components.

Selection Criteria

To intelligently choose your own shredder pump, answer a few questions:

  1. What capacity does the system require? This is influenced by the volume of daily drains in your home.
  2. What is the size of the cross-sectional area of the sewage pipe? Not all pumps will fit one type of sewer. Adapters may be required.
  3. What kind of waste will be discharged into the toilet, bathtub, other connected devices and what are their sizes?
  4. What is the distance from your toilet to the drain?
  5. Is it necessary to connect additional equipment other than the toilet bowl?
  6. What is the temperature of the waste to be treated?

Available sizes and compact models

Today, there are standard-sized shredder pumps available that can easily fit inside your toilet.

However, large devices are not always appropriate if the bathroom is small or the space behind the cistern is small. Compact models come to the rescue. The width of the box in these shredders is about 12 centimeters. To find such a space behind the toilet is not difficult, and you do not need to create complex and massive constructions of plasterboard to hide the box.

Carefully study the range on the market, determine the desired dimensions of the shredder. Finding a suitable option today is not a problem.

Calculation of the minimum power

We have already said that the distance from the toilet bowl to the sewer plays an important role in the choice of power. But how to calculate the power correctly, so that the device coped with its task?

In the manual and the passport of the device specifies all its technical characteristics. Nevertheless, mistakes in the choice are often made. Do not rush to go to specialists, because they charge dearly for their services, and in fact you can figure out the nuances of the power yourself.

So, let's imagine that the pump you have chosen transports waste to 80 meters horizontally and 7 meters vertically. Do not think that this will actually be the case.

First of all, the passport specifies the maximum figures. In order to realize such a transportation range it will be necessary to switch on the pump at maximum power. This will lead to its rapid wear and tear. Buy a shredder with extra power.

Another important point - the distance and the height of transportation are mutually exclusive. Here, rely on a simple calculation formula - for each meter of transporting waste upwards, the horizontal delivery range is reduced by 10 meters.

For example, the pump capacity is designed for 100 meters horizontally. But if the waste has to be lifted 1 meter vertically, then the first figure is reduced to 90 meters.

Installation

The principle of installation of the shredder pump is based on several fairly simple sequential operations:

  1. Route the outlet pipe at an incline, connect it to the system with the help of a tee.
  2. To it connect the outlet for the pump, and it to the drain, using a flexible design.
  3. Make sure that the corrugated pipes do not sag, there is no curvature completely. Otherwise, there will be an additional load on the pump.
  4. The waste will flow into the pump box by gravity, so it is important to follow some rules:
  5. The opening of the pump inlet is located above the toilet outlet;
  6. The angle of rotation is minimal, and better without it.
  7. It remains to connect the device to the mains and the installation can be considered complete.
