Rimless toilet - from selection to installation

Rimless WC - from selection to installation.

Manufacturers of sanitary ware are constantly improving their products and create all new products, distinguished by hygiene, cost-effectiveness and attractive appearance. One of them can be called a toilet rimless, that is a product without a rim. Outwardly similar to any standard toilet, but at a closer look at its design, it becomes clear that the rimless toilet has a completely different device, which determines its advantages over models with a rim.

A little history

Rimless toilets became available to buyers not so long ago. The first models of toilets without a rim have been created by the Japanese in 2002. They were developed by the company Toto. One of the very first European manufacturers of rimless models is the British brand Twyford Bathrooms. In 2007, the company began producing rimless toilets for medical use, and in 2012 it created and patented the Rimfree technology used today by the Keramag brand.

Since 2014, rimless toilet bowl models have been widely available and are now represented by many brands, including RAK Ceramics, Duravit, VitrA, Roca, Cersanit, Laufen, and Gustavsberg.

Pros of

  • The rimless toilet is considered a highly hygienic device, because it has no hidden areas and hard-to-reach places for cleaning, so its surface does not deposit dirt and bacteria do not multiply.
  • The rimless toilet has a neat and aesthetic appearance.
  • This toilet is very easy to look after, even without frequent treatment with chemicals. To keep the rimless toilet bowl clean, it is enough to wipe its bowl with wet wipes or a soft cloth.
  • A more infrequent treatment with household chemicals helps save on cleaning products and reduces the pollution of nature, as well as lengthens the life of the toilet bowl.
  • A toilet that does not have a rimless toilet can be called an economical model because less water is used in it. The drain in rimless models has a volume of only 2-4 liters, while in a standard toilet the consumption is 4-6 liters per flush.
  • The cost of such a toilet is not much different from the prices of standard models.
  • Suspended models with a cistern built into the wall are characterized by less noisy operation.

Cons

As such, there are no significant disadvantages in rimless models, so the disadvantages of such toilets consider only some shortcomings in certain brands. For example, some models may be represented by too large size or have an unsuitable depth of the bowl, and in others, the disadvantage may be their insufficient completeness.

How it works

Models without a rim differ primarily in the structure of the bowl itself. If you cut the bowl of a standard toilet bowl, you will see a U-like section, under which the dirt collects. The rimless models do not have this problem, because the rim itself is absent. At the same time, some manufacturers have a small depression on the surface, while others have completely smooth walls.

Since the rimless toilet bowl does not have a ceramic peripheral part, which prevents water leakage when draining, the main task of the developers of such a sanitary device was to ensure quality flushing without water escaping beyond the bowl. For this purpose, different technologies have been created. One of them is Rimfree technology, which provides special patented devices that separate the water. Another technology Tornado Flush, used by the Toto brand, is the outflow of water from 3 holes creating a vortex.

Types

Suspended (with installation)

Installation of these models of rimless toilet is carried out with the use of the installation. Users' worries about the unreliability of such variants of the toilet bowl are unfounded, because the mounting element in the rimless wall-hung toilet can withstand up to 500 kg.

The cistern of such toilet bowls is built into the wall, but the risk of leakage is minimal due to the absence of seams and the presence of an emergency overflow system. The manufacturer gives a 10-year warranty on the mechanism of the cistern, and it is easy to replace it through the drain button.

Floor

This model of rimless toilet is mounted with support on the floor. Floor rimless toilet comes in both earthenware and porcelain. Its frequent additions are a bidet lid or a microlift seat.

Brands and models

The most famous manufacturers of WCs without a rim are such companies:

  • VitrA. The company has been offering bathroom products and plumbing fixtures for decades. It developed the Rim-Ex flush system, which is used in hospitals and other public places. The toilets of this manufacturer are distinguished by the presence of an additional compartment, in which the cleaning agent is added (it comes out with the water when draining).
  • TOTO. Rimless toilets of this manufacturer have the Tornado Flash flush system with 2-3 streams of water. The products of this brand also have a program to kill bacteria and a motion sensor.
  • Roca. This company has been in the plumbing industry since 1929. The toilets of this brand are often installed in famous hotels. The popular model GAP A346477000 of this manufacturer is a suspended multifunctional toilet with dimensions of 30x34x54 cm.

Tips for choosing

First of all, decide on the placement of the toilet, choosing either a floor-standing or suspended model. Take into account the features of the water supply to the cistern of the device, as well as the size of your bathroom.

After reviewing the products of different manufacturers and reading the reviews of people who have already installed a toilet without a rim at home, decide on the model of sanitary ware. In this case, take into account the finish of your bathroom and the color of other plumbing fixtures.

In conclusion, find out about the presence of additional functions in the selected toilet bowl. If you wish, you can pick up the product with a microlift (the seat of such a toilet will go down smoothly) or with a bidet lid (this model will provide additional hygiene after use).

Installation

Features of the installation of a particular rimless type toilet will be determined by the parameters of the model. Communications to such a toilet bowl can be led hidden or remain visible. At the same time, it is important to make sure that the connections and hoses are tight to prevent possible leakage of water.
