Replacing the pump in the washing machine with your own hands

There is nothing worse than scooping out soapy water with a ladle because the drain suddenly stopped showing signs of life. If you're not one of those who on any occasion begins to storm the nearest service center, this article may be useful to you.

To begin with, let's briefly understand the device of the drain. At the end of the washing process, water rushes through a short pipe, coming from the drum, to the drain pump. The electronics give a signal - and the pump begins to pump the liquid into the drain pipe, from where it enters the sewer. When there is no water left in the tank, the pump turns off. The system "branch pipe - pump - drain hose" is mounted on a distributor, shaped like a snail. It is actually named after it.
Throughout the whole process, and especially during wringing, the pump bears a huge load.
On its way out of the tank, the water is blocked by a drain filter - a grid that protects the pump from coins, buttons and other small debris. If foreign objects do not get into the internal space of the device, there is a high probability that the pump will get clogged and fail. Then it will have to be repaired or even replaced with a new one.

Causes of breakdowns, their signs and options for elimination
Among the most frequent causes of problems with draining the spent liquid, masters call clogging pipes that lead water into the sewage system, power failure, damage of a mechanical nature and, finally, insufficient motor power.
The most common cause of problems with the pump is clogging. In this case, it is necessary to clean the inside of the pump, the volute and the drain filter.
First of all, de-energize the device. There is a small round hatch in the bottom of the housing; put a suitable container underneath it to drain the remaining water in the machine. Consider a liquid volume of at least 1 liter. After opening the door, remove the filter and clean it. Then return the grill to its original position, close the door and restart the washing machine.

Is the drain still not working? The causes lie in a damaged pump. The problems may be related to electrical: perhaps one of the wires is damaged, as a result of which the voltage to the pump is disturbed. In this case, you should remove the back of the device and visually check the condition of each contact, as well as the reliability of their connection. To find broken wires, use a tester or other instrument.
If the work of the pump is accompanied by vibration, the cause of the malfunction is related to problems with the rotating part of the pump - it is called an impeller. You will have to disassemble the machine and replace the damaged element of the pump.
Drainage of water is accompanied by a hum? Most likely, the impeller is jammed. Most often the cause of such problems are jammed objects. In order to remove the debris, you must first remove the drain filter and then the volute from the machine housing.
If you are convinced that there is no blockage in the impeller, but the water still leaves the drum very slowly, the cause of the problem lies in the lack of power.

It is worth talking about replacing the pump if the following "symptoms" are manifested during the operation of the washing equipment:
- the device has stopped without finishing the execution of the set program;
- the appliance is working, but water drainage does not occur;
- the water drainage is constantly accompanied by strange sounds - hum, noise etc.
Tips for choosing a new pump for replacement
In each case, the choice of the pump is determined by the design features of this unit.
Depending on how the pump is mounted in relation to the volute, there are devices installed
- by means of screws (usually 3 screws are used for this purpose);
- by means of latches (their number can be from 3 to 8 pieces);
- having combined mounts.
The pumps can be equipped with either plugs or terminals for connection to the power grid. The power rating of such pumps varies from 19 to 20 watts. It also matters where the contacts are located - the wires can be attached both at the front and at the back.
Keep in mind that with some minor differences, pumps from different manufacturers are interchangeable.
You can buy a new drain pump not only in service centers, but also on the Internet.

Repair
Before you can replace a failed unit, it must be dismantled.
All machines are constructed differently. Therefore, there is no universal algorithm for replacing the pump. The course of the work depends on the design features of your washing machine.
In the case of independent replacement of the drain pump, the costs will be minimal, because you only have to pay for a new pump.
Before removing the faulty unit, mark on the volute the place of its attachment. Better yet, take a picture. It will help you make no mistakes and install the new pump very accurately. By the way, you can capture every step of the repair work, so you will feel much more confident.
Installation through the bottom (Samsung, Indesit, Beko, Ardo, Whirpool, Candy, LG, Ariston)
In machines of such popular brands as Samsung, Indesit, Beko, Ardo, Whirpool, Candy, LG, Ariston to change the pump under force even to people far from the world of technology.
Replacing the pump in the washing machine LG can be made by the video channel "Secrets of the seller of household appliances".
To get to the pump, you will not have to disassemble the body of the machine. The work will be done through the bottom. This method of replacement is considered the easiest.
- Disconnect the washing machine from the mains.
- Shut off the water supply to it.
- Position the machine on its side, so that relative to you, the pump is at the top. The floor can be covered in advance, so as not to accidentally damage the enamel of the housing.
- Remove the panel located at the bottom. If the bottom is also protected by a panel, remove it by unscrewing the fasteners.
- Unscrew the drain pump. Note that the screws holding it are on the outside; look for them in the area of the drain valve.
- To remove the pump, push it from the outside.
- Place the pump over a previously prepared container - the remaining water will flow into it.
- Now unfasten the clamps securing the pipe connection and the drain hose.
- Carefully remove the hose and socket, drain the remainder of the liquid into the prepared container.
The given algorithm is designed for the cases when it is necessary to replace the volute together with the pump.

But there are cases when it is not necessary to replace the volute. Then you should unscrew only the pump, which is fixed by several bolts or special latches. Remove the screws connecting the pump to the volute and replace the necessary element of the drainage system. Pay special attention to the condition of the snail, thoroughly cleaning it of plaque and small debris.
Return all parts and elements to their places, repeating the process in reverse order.
You can visually see the process of replacing the pump in the Indesit washing machine in the following video.
With removal of the front wall (Bosch, Siemens, AEG)
In German equipment, the bottom is securely closed, so it is impossible to get inside from below. Here you have to get to the pump through the front wall of the machine.
To do this, first it is necessary to unscrew a couple of fasteners located on the back of the machine, and remove the housing cover. Then remove the panel covering the valve, which is responsible for the drain. Be sure to remove any residual liquid from the machine.
Move on to the most responsible step - removal of the control panel. Remove the detergent dispenser and unscrew the bolts fixing the panel. Be careful not to damage the wires that connect the panel to the cabinet. Put the device on top of the machine.
Next, turn your attention to the collar. Use a screwdriver to loosen the collar securing it, then remove it and tuck it into the tank.
Unscrew the bolts securing the pump, and then remove the remaining fasteners that hold the front of the housing in place (look for them at the top and bottom of the housing).
When removing the cover, note that the hatch lock is still wired to the machine. However, these wires can be pulled out if necessary.

So, the front wall is removed. Let's move on to replacing the drain pump. Here everything is done in the way that was described in detail above:
- de-energize the pump;
- remove the pipe and hose, loosening the clamps, which ensure the sealing of connections;
- disconnect the pump from the volute.
In some machines replacement is even easier: to disconnect the pump, you only need to turn it from right to left.
After thoroughly cleaning the distributor, mount the new pump on it. Assemble the machine and run it in test mode.

With removal of the back wall (Electrolux, Zanussi and on machines with vertical loading)
In machines of this type, the penetration to the drain pump is carried out through the back of the housing. In devices with vertical loading, the pump is easier to install by removing the side wall of the housing.
Removing the back wall:
- Remove any fluid residue by draining it through the valve or emergency hose;
- remove the upper housing cover as described above;
- locate and remove the bolts securing the rear wall of the machine;
- separate the intake valve from the rear wall;
- remove the rear wall from the housing of the washing machine.
Removing the side wall:
- From the back of the machine, unscrew the screws securing the side wall.
- then remove the screw from the bottom front of the housing
- Slide the side panel back and down - and simply remove it.
Replacement of the pump is done in the standard way:
- Disconnect the wires from the drain pump.
- Then remove the bolts and/or latches (their availability depends on the modification) and separate the distributor from the pump.
- Thoroughly clean the volute of sediment and debris, install the new pump on it.
- Connect the contacts and assemble the machine.

Unscrewing the bar (Hansa)
To remove the pump from the machines of this brand, it is enough to remove the metal strip located in the base of the case. It is on this bar that the pump, designed for water drainage, is fixed. Having unscrewed the pump, follow the standard algorithm, which is described in detail above.

On how you can quickly replace the pump in the washing machine, see the video channel "Service Center Hands from the Shoulders".
Malfunction Prevention
The average pump is designed for 10 years of operation. But this is on the condition that the user observes the rules of operation of the washing equipment. To prevent malfunctions associated with drain pump failure, before loading the laundry into the drum, inspect it for small parts. Soak or rinse clothes that are too dirty beforehand. If your clothes have lint or lint on them, place them in special wash bags.
