3D tiles for the bathroom - immersion into another dimension

With each passing day in the design of rooms, including bathrooms, more and more often use new technologies. One such innovative approach to the design of the room is the use of tiles with a three-dimensional image. They are called tiles with a 3D effect. With these tiles, you can create a one-of-a-kind, stylish and extremely beautiful bathroom design. And the 3D effect will help you bring the picture you have chosen to life and find yourself in another world.

What is it?

3D tile - this is, first of all, one of the types of facing material, consisting of an ordinary tile, on which several layers of polycarbonate film and some image are applied. These layers create the effect of a three-dimensional image.

3D tiles can be wall, floor and even ceiling. On the ceiling, it can imitate a cloudy or clear sky; on the floor - textures of nature, such as grass with dewdrops, sand or underwater rocks, and on the wall of the room can display a whole city, forest or field, stretching to the horizon, etc.

In addition, with 3D tiles - an ordinary bathroom can be designed as an underwater world with its diverse inhabitants. Such paintings on 3D tiles are so bright and clear, that the interior created with their help is striking for its realism and give the most pleasant feeling.

Advantages of

The advantages of 3D-tiles are many:

  1. They have the same positive properties as ceramic tiles, that is, they are durable, resistant to moisture, fire-resistant and hygienic.
  2. And the floor models, in addition, are very resistant to abrasion. They can withstand up to 200 kg of weight per cm2.
  3. 3D tiles are capable of influencing the visual and spatial perception inside a room.
  4. The variety of options for decorating the room with them is so great that it is easy to create your own exclusive and extremely beautiful design.
  5. They are durable. According to some manufacturers, 3D tiles can last more than a dozen years.
  6. These products are hygienic: mold does not form on them, and they do not contribute to the development of fungi and other microorganisms.
  7. 3D tiles are quite resistant to various detergents, including aggressive ones.
  8. They are completely hypoallergenic.
  9. Their surface has an anti-slip character.

Cons

  1. 3D tiles can only be laid on a perfectly aligned surface. Due to irregularities and defects on the wall or floor, the visual effect of the volume can be lost or distorted.
  2. It must not be cut or laid with a bend exceeding 2 degrees.
  3. They should not be used for exterior applications or for decorating seasonal houses that are not heated in winter.

3D photo tile

3D photo tile is essentially the same as 3D tile. The only difference between the former is that you can order the photo tile yourself. To do this you need to take a very high resolution photo. The selected photo is applied to the tile at a high temperature. As a result of the thermal influence, the paint becomes gaseous and penetrates the polymer coating and becomes fixed in the tile. The product is then covered with a layer of glaze.

How is it made?

When manufacturing 3D tiles, a microlens technology is used. The essence of this technology is that several special layers are applied to the surface of ordinary tiles, which can protect and create the effect of a dynamic pattern. First of all, a base layer of polycarbonate is applied. Then a cushioning layer is applied, after which the surface is covered with a reflective film with an image. On top of the picture is applied a super-transparent layer, which performs the function of the lenses. It is this layer which makes the image appear three-dimensional. For greater durability, the product is covered with a protective anti-shock layer. This layer makes the product more wear-resistant and prolongs its life.

Choosing Tips

  1. We do not recommend to take for a small bathroom overly colorful colors of 3D tiles, as the abundance of bright spots and bright dynamic image can create the impression of a cramped room.
  2. Also we advise you to be careful with the selection of accessories, as any detail can steal a little more space.
  3. For large bathrooms, you can choose tiles in a wider color palette with a variety of shapes and more interior objects.
  4. The main thing is not to forget about moderation and a sense of taste. It is important that all interior elements are in harmony with each other.

Laying technique

The process of tiling the room with 3D tiles is not very different from the process of tiling with standard ceramic tiles. 3D tiles can be installed by yourself, and you can use the help of specialists.

To install the tiles yourself, you need:

  1. Ensure a perfectly flat surface on the walls and floor. Make sure that the surface is absolutely dry and not loose.
  2. Prepare the tiling products.
  3. Prepare the mixture with which you will glue the tiles to the walls or floor. The mixture, as a rule, should contain silicone, cement or gypsum. Tiles can also be mounted with double-sided tape. And for floors with a heating system, heat-resistant mixes are used.
  4. If you are going to install backlighting in the bathroom, do the electrical work in advance.
  5. In this case, you will have to install guides, to which later you can attach tiles. Guides should be cut from materials such as polycarbonate, Plexiglas or PET.
  6. After installing the guides, you can begin attaching the 3D tiles. When laying the tiles, you should leave a small gap between them with a width of about 3-4 mm. This is to ensure that the image does not "move away" due to differences in the size of the tiles.
  7. If you don't need backlighting, the 3D tiles should be attached directly to the main surface. Do not forget to leave a gap. You will fill it later with a sealant with a colorless silicone-based coloring. Apply grout to the joints must be carefully with a trowel, so as not to damage the coating of the tiles.
  8. Remove the remains of the sealant mixture with a wet rag.
  9. When laying tiles with a three-dimensional image on the floor to create a perfectly flat surface, you can use a self-levelling mixture, which is able to level even small differences in height.

Care

3D tiles are easy to care for. They can be cleaned with a damp sponge and then wiped down with a dry cloth. The only difficulty may be the use of hard water. It can leave a deposit on the tiles. And to avoid this buildup, you need to add special water softeners when cleaning.

Remember that tiles must be handled very carefully, as their top layer can easily be damaged. Any scratches or chips can completely or partially distort the whole picture. In addition, as a result of deformation, the tile can lose its glossy appearance.

And yet, all manufacturers of 3D tiles assure that if used properly, these tiles can last more than 25 years, preserving all their qualities.
