Shower Cabinet Rollers

Practice shows that more and more people have recently switched over to using shower cabins, replacing traditional baths with them. This is practical in many cases. Nevertheless, the stall requires a certain amount of maintenance. The most common problem is the rollers on which the shower door slides.
Today the most common are bearing-mounted rollers, but there are also hub-mounted models.
Adjustment methods
Rollers can be adjusted in three different ways.
Eccentric
The most popular option, which consists of driving the upper rollers into the guide, then they are lowered as much as possible down by the step of the eccentric used. Then you need to enter the bottom rollers and lift them up, also with the help of the eccentric. As a result, you will clamp the glass door of your stall in the guides.
Carefully adjust the pressure on the rail, taking into account the full stroke of the door. If the guide rail is sagging, it could cause the roller to come out of it when it is closed. Keep in mind, there are only a few models of this type of adjustment that can be pivoted. The bulk are non-swiveling.

Bolt
In the upper part of the single or double roller there is a trolley or a flag with wheels, which is attached to the roller body by a bolt. The height is adjusted by the movement of the bolt.
The upper rollers are installed first, as the lower rollers are predominantly pressure rollers. Therefore, it is not necessary to adjust them. The lower rollers must be inserted into the rail and that's it, the adjustment is done independently.
With this system, the doors can be rotary, where the rail is shaped, with curves. The wheels are not braked when turning, so the service life of the roller is significantly increased.

On sleeves and without bearing
In this case, the balls simply rotate on the rods of the rollers, and the fixation is carried out in the center of the plastic component of the wheel. Their main advantage is the low cost. Nevertheless, using this method of adjustment is strongly discouraged.

Frequent problems
Users of shower cabins sometimes encounter certain problems associated with their new plumbing fixtures.
Let's look at the most popular problems:
- Should I use double rollers? Some people think that since the roller is double, it means it is twice as reliable. But this is not the case. As practice has shown, double castors are not the best option for shower cabins. In this case, we can only recommend that you pay attention to high-quality single elements. It is better not to save money here, and immediately buy the products of a reliable manufacturer.
- Exotic types that are difficult to replace. Are there any universal rollers? Not so long ago you would have been told that no. However, now the situation has changed, there are quite highly effective universal elements.
The main advantage of universal casters is that they have a wide range of adjustments for the bottom and top, as well as the use of a spring. With its help, the roller adapts itself to the conditions offered by the shower enclosure. Such rollers are shown in the green frame in the picture below.

How to determine quality
Of course, in order to buy effective, durable rollers, it is necessary to pay attention to their quality. Since they are now able to disguise fakes very well, it is not such a simple task to determine the quality products from the low-grade ones.
So, you should pay attention to three parameters:
- Appearance. Carefully examine the item, examine it from each side, check for cracks, chips and so on. In some cases, according to this sign, you can understand that in front of us a bad, worn or low-grade roller, which is strongly not recommended to buy.
- The quality of the material and coating. It is better to choose models that have the axle made of brass, coated with nickel. If there is no nickel layer, the roller will not look the best. Plus don't forget, brass oxidizes and changes its color when exposed to a humid environment.
- The degree of protection of the bearing. If it is all steel, it will not last long, especially in conditions of high humidity. The best choice is brass, and the balls should also be made of it. This way the element will not corrode, though there is an alternative as a traditional bearing with plastic caps on the sides of the product. This allows for more protection for the balls.

Choosing the bearing
In the rollers for the shower, the bearing plays almost the most important role. In many ways, the quality, efficiency and durability of the system of closing and opening the door depends on it.
Let's say at once that bearings can be sliding or rolling. We are not interested in the former, because they are not used in the manufacture of shower cabins.
In terms of design, a single-row deep groove ball bearing is ideal for the stall.
However, here you should also pay attention to the material:
- Combined product. Often used in European and some Chinese models. The material consists of bronze and plastic. And the plastic is used to make a cage, and the outer and inner cage, as well as the balls themselves - from bronze.
- Ceramic. An excellent solution according to all characteristics, except one - the high price. As market analysis has shown, the cost of a ceramic bearing exceeds the standard one by approximately 10-14 times.

Alas, such products are not very easy to find, and therefore it is necessary to look for alternative ways out.
Pay attention to the fact that it is a closed bearing with caps made of plastic, not metal. This way you will protect the product from moisture and also avoid rust.
Of course, don't forget the dimensions. To select the right size bearing you need to know three parameters - width, inside diameter and outside diameter. Measure them with a ruler.
