Art Deco style bathroom

Art Deco style originated in France, in the second decade of the twentieth century. Artists, sculptors and architects drew inspiration from the phenomena that defined the cultural, social life of the era. This is the emergence of jazz, and the unprecedented surge in the popularity of Russian ballet, and the development of sports and travel to exotic countries.

The Art Deco style merged all the popular art movements of the beginning of the last century: neoclassicism, futurism, cubism, constructivism. The works of artists who created in the Art Deco style combine order and strict geometry with luxury finishes, intricate patterns and ornaments. Capturing the beginning and end of World War I, Art Deco was a backlash against the restrictions and moderation in all things that were dictated by military necessity. Over time, Art Deco came to be perceived as an overly luxurious, garish style, and by the mid-20th century it was gradually forgotten.

A few decades later the Art Deco style regained its former popularity. Today it is one of the most beautiful and unusual directions in interior design. The combination of the achievements of art of the XX century, modern materials and production technologies allows to create really exquisite and luxurious interiors.

Among other style trends, art deco can easily be distinguished by several characteristic features:

• modern, expensive materials - silver, ivory, rare woods, steel, enamel, natural leather;
• sharp angles, curved lines, steps and zigzags;
• recurring motif of piano keys;
• restrained color scheme - mostly black, white, gray, beige, purple;
• floral and animal ornaments;
• Solar symbolism - a recurring image of the sun and its rays;
• the vertical stripe as one of the most common patterns;
• ancient Greek notions of beauty as a harmony of form and content;
• ornaments and decorative elements referring to the primitive art of the peoples of Africa and South America;
• framed mirrors, framed pictures, framing elements for furniture and other interior items.

Despite the desire for luxury, Art Deco is characterized by a fairly calm color scheme, where bright hues are used very proportionally. The classic combination for this style is black + white. Brightest of all it is embodied in one of the favorite motifs of art deco - alternation of black and white keys of musical instruments. The wallpaper with black and white vertical stripes or the same upholstery on the sofa is associated with piano keys and reminds of long jazz melodies.

In addition to the classic combination of black and white, the following color pairs are often found in art deco interiors: black + gray, gray + purple, gray + pink, white + purple, beige + gray, beige + brown. More than two colors are rarely used in the decoration of the walls, floor and ceiling, but the dominant color can be a dark color. As bright color accents, rich red, yellow, green, orange shades may appear.

Finishing surfaces in the art deco style is of particular importance.

Geometry can be repeated on the walls, but in a smaller quantity, so that the bathroom does not look overloaded with strict lines. As for the ceiling, then for its decoration you can use and tiles, but only of very good quality. In the art deco style quite often the method of framing the ceiling in a frame of contrasting colors is used. However, you can frame not the entire ceiling, but only the space under the chandelier - but in this case it must be large enough.

If we talk about art deco interior in general, the wallpaper can be called the best solution for finishing walls. Modern manufacturers of finishing materials produce entire collections of wallpaper in the art deco style. They are distinguished by a soft and noble color scheme and extremely beautiful, fantasy patterns. However, our task is to decorate the bathroom, where wallpaper is not always appropriate. After all, constant contact with water and steam will not be able to withstand even the most expensive washable wallpaper.

So ceramic tile can be considered an ideal option, but only if you own a very small bathroom, in which there is no place where water splashes can't reach.

Furniture in the bathroom, decorated in the art deco style, should be classic - massive, but, at the same time, elegant. Standard lockers and shelves of plastic and chipboard should be replaced by quality chests of drawers, cabinets, tabletops made of wood or other expensive materials (or their quality imitations). Furnishings should have a simple form, but a rich finish of metal, glass, inlay, etc.

If the size of the bathroom allows, place in it things that are not characteristic for this room, such as an easy chair or a coffee table.

As for the bathroom fixtures, they should also be large in size. Since we are working on a modern interior, there is no need to buy plumbing equipment stylized for the beginning of the last century. On the contrary, try to use the latest achievements of plumbing manufacturers. Bathtubs, sinks, toilets and bidets can be the most incredible forms. Rounded shapes, smooth, curved lines are welcome. As materials are suitable for manufacturing simple sanitary ware and acrylic, most importantly, that they were of good quality, otherwise disappear feeling of luxury, to which we are striving, creating an interior art deco style.

Paintings and sculptures are usual in the living room, but in the bathroom they still look very unusual. Of course, authentic paintings on canvas or paper posters won't last long in humid conditions. That's why our choice is reproductions printed on special, water-resistant materials. Since art deco is largely based on the art of the twentieth century, the most suitable paintings for our bathroom are paintings by futurists, cubists and other representatives of the fashion trends of that epoch. Paintings should be framed in classical frames.

The sculptures can be made in the spirit of abstractionism or represent reduced copies of works by ancient masters. If you don't like this kind of art, but still want to add some glamor to the room, take a closer look at miniature stone fountains.

A mirror in the bathroom should be a must. If it is a bathroom, decorated in the Art Deco style, the mirror should be a large, massive frame, in silver, gilt or simply black.

In the art deco style, classic fixtures are preferred. As the main source of light, choose a large but elegant chandelier with metal and glass elements, decorated with pendants - that is, stylized as a ceiling chandelier. On the walls you can place small sconces from the same collection.

• Art Deco was born in the heyday of the cosmetics industry, that's why all sorts of bottles and vials occupied a place of honor in the boudoirs and bathrooms of high society ladies. Today's plastic packaging bears little resemblance to that of a century ago. To maintain the atmosphere of luxury and glamour, buy a set of beautiful glass bottles and pour your shampoos, balms and shower gels into them.
