Bathroom finishing options: The alternative to tiling

When approaching a bathroom renovation, not everyone thinks that the only option for finishing the floor and walls is tile. There are several alternatives that, among other things, can save finances, as well as reduce the time for finishing work.

Finishing walls

Paint

An option that requires no materials at all is paint. Manufacturers offer a lot of options for moisture-resistant paints, which are suitable for the bathroom.

The advantages of such a solution are quite weighty:

  • You can choose almost any color or several at once;
  • Paints differ in texture, can be glossy or matte, you can create different effects;
  • This method does not require high skills - anyone can paint the walls with a brush or roller;
  • This is quite a budget option - depending on the area of the room and the paint you choose, you can settle on a modest budget.
  • Painting does not take much time - most likely, the work will pass in one day.

However, if you decide to paint the walls, and not only in the bathroom, then significant time, money and effort will require the preparation of the surface - the walls.

To take the walls for painting, you need to clean them from the old coating, remove old plaster, especially in those places where it "sits" loose and level the walls again. There is also an option to "seal" the walls with gypsum board. The final result is covered with primer for two times, and then you can paint.

Plastic panels

Another option for the bathroom - plastic panels. They are resistant to moisture, create an even surface even on an imperfect wall, have a huge number of color solutions. As a rule, one PVC panel is several times larger than a square of tile, which means the installation will be faster.

Plastic panels are attached either to liquid nails, directly to the wall. Note that if the bathroom has an old tile shawl, which has lost its appeal, but still holds up well and is made "in good faith", then the panels can be glued directly on top of it. Another option for fixing - on the frame. If the walls are not flat enough, but the frame of aluminum profile, protruding a couple of centimeters, fix the picture, and mount on a frame of panels is easy and simple.

Moisture-resistant wallpaper

The next option is moisture-resistant wallpaper. They are produced by many brands that produce "clothes for walls". However, wallpaper is better used in bathrooms, the area of which allows "turn around". Thus, beautiful wallpaper can decorate those areas that are not directly exposed to water. The walls adjacent to the sink and bathtub, however, finish with something more loyal to moisture.

Despite the fact that the wallpaper is labeled "suitable for the bathroom", it is based on paper, albeit impregnated with special substances. Therefore, long-term use of wallpaper in the bathroom is not worth counting on - over time, they can peel off.

Decorative plaster

Decorative plaster finish will look appropriate in the bathroom, if this material is protected by moisture-resistant varnish. In the market of construction materials there is a mass of options for such a decor: different in texture and color, such plasters can act "solo" or become a partner for any type of finishing, described above.

Floor finishes

Linoleum

When you have decided what to finish the walls, you can shift your attention to the floor. Here, admittedly, there are not many alternatives to tile, but there are. First of all, as a floor covering for the bathroom will be successfully linoleum.

The main thing is to choose a linoleum of the appropriate class - in this case, you need a coating of 21-23 classes, suitable for residential areas. Next, it is necessary to consider the properties of linoleum.

The bathroom has the following requirements:

  • Low slip coefficient, so as not to get injured on the wet floor;
  • The ability to create airtight joints by welding or gluing;
  • Minimum porosity of the substrate so that it does not absorb moisture;
  • High moisture resistance and wear resistance of the upper layer.

Laying linoleum assumes that the room will not be furniture and the bathtub itself, otherwise the material will have to cut and "fit" under the legs and other protrusions. If it is possible to put a linoleum solid piece, the work does not take much time - the material should give time to rest and straighten, then fix it skirting.

Moisture-resistant laminate

Another option for flooring in the bathroom - moisture-resistant laminate. Unlike conventional, it perfectly retains moisture on the surface and does not deform, and its layers are firmly pressed together, which eliminates delamination when water hits.

In the laying of such a coating has its own nuances, first of all, it is the choice of a special sealing adhesive, which will protect the joints of the laminate.

Another important point - the choice of substrate, which must also meet the requirements of moisture resistance. In the rest, the laying of laminate flooring in the bathroom is no different from the usual process in any other room.

Examples

In this interior, not marble slabs are used at all, but ordinary PVC panels. Due to the shape and pattern imitating marble, as well as the competent layout on the walls, the plastic panels create a great imitation of living stone, while remaining a budget and easy option for bathroom renovation.

This is a great option for how to "settle" wallpaper in the bathroom. Here, the wallpaper shades only part of the wall that is located by the window, contrasting with the calm color of the other walls. However, do not forget that this option is good if your bathroom has a good air flow or ventilation, so that the wallpaper is not damp.

A juicy option that will suit cheerful people! This bathroom is a beautiful combination of three colors - white and shades of fuchsia. The main colors are diluted by bright accessories: colorful towels and cosmetics jars.

Decorative stone finishing is another great solution for the bathroom. Here the stone is perfectly combined with wood, bamboo and rattan, with which other walls are finished, and the color scheme sets up for calm and relaxation.
