Boiler on wood

Solid fuel water heaters appeared among the first, but still remain in demand and are often used in cottages and baths. They are especially relevant in areas where there is no gas or electricity.

Pros and cons
Each water heater has its pros and cons. Let's look at the main qualities of a wood-fired boiler.

Disadvantages
Of the disadvantages of the unit, the following can be distinguished:
- Heating of water occurs in portions. You have to wait for the heating of the next portion of water;
- the lack of automation;
- The lack of a temperature regulator (in some units);
- In winter, the water must be drained, because the walls of the tank can deform.

Advantages
Pros:
- a portion of water is heated in 20-30 minutes;
- no need to connect to the utilities;
- simple design and inexpensive price. Also, any person without special skills can assemble and disassemble such a unit;
- autonomy.

Design and principle of operation
Wood-fired water heaters, in Soviet times were called "Titans". The device of the "Titan" is as follows. The water boiler has in its composition a combustion chamber, in which the fuel is placed: firewood or coal. In it is placed the grate. Under the grate there is an ash pan - a chamber for ash. On the top or on the side there is a chimney.

The boiler needs fuel to work.

Burning creates a flow of hot air, which heats the pipe, which heats the water. The water rises upward. Through a tee, it goes to the shower.

Features
Boilers on wood have their own characteristics: weight, chimney diameter, volume, diameter and material of the tank, design of the furnace, mixer (available or not included).

Modern bodies of the unit are made of metal, also installed screens, placed inside the surfaces of the body. They allow you to avoid heating the walls of the boiler and protect the body from various types of damage and deformation. Cast iron material is used for the combustion chamber. Some manufacturers build furnaces out of fire-resistant bricks.

Applications
Titanium has a small size, so it is easy to install in the bathroom or in the cottage, where the owners usually take a shower. It is only necessary to be equipped with a water supply and drain.

Choosing Tips
Here are some tips to help you choose the best wood-fired boiler for everyday life:
- Titanium heats faster if the tank and firebox are not separate;
- A cast iron firebox is better than a steel one because it has a longer lifespan;
- a wood-burning boiler with a split furnace can rotate, thus the mixer tap can be set in any position convenient for you
- in a hot-water boiler can be built in a heating element, which will provide you with a long-term preservation of hot water in the boiler.

Stainless steel tank will last longer, but the price for such a device will be more expensive.

How to make their own hands?
Boiler on firewood can be made by yourself. To do this, you need the following components:
- tank made of metal;
- chimney and pipes for water drainage;
- Ribbons and profiles made of steel;
- grate - a grate for firewood;
- fasteners;
- drill;
- welding machine.

The most difficult thing in the construction of the apparatus is the firebox. Here you need to be especially careful. The furnace has the following parts:
- The combustion chamber - this is where the wood is placed;
- ash pan - it is separated from the combustion chamber by the grate;
- chimney - can be installed either on the side or on top, whichever is more convenient.

To avoid problems during combustion, it is necessary to ensure the supply of oxygen into the ash-pan chamber - the ash-pan.

Next, it is necessary to place containers: a tank or water pipes over the furnace. The main thing is the tightness of the devices. If you place water pipes, they should be placed in the form of a spiral.

The joints should be insulated to prevent leaks.
Assembling the water heater in stages
Initially, let's deal with the tank. Its top must be cut off with a welder to access inside. Then let's mount the grate. It must be made at 25 cm from the bottom of the tank. Separate the upper compartment with a steel profile.
50 cm is the depth of the firebox. On the side you need to make holes and hinges to fix the door. Holes are needed for firewood, an ash drawer and an ash pan.
Then we make the exhaust pipe and build the mixer. At this stage, the creation of the wood-fired boiler is complete. The finishing touch will be to bring water into the tank and install the faucet.

As you can see, there is nothing complicated about making a wood-burning water heater with your own hands. It is not difficult to do. In the following video you can see another interesting idea on how to make a wood burning titanium yourself.
