The mirror in the bathroom with his hands

The mirror in the bathroom with his hands

When large-scale construction work on the renovation of the bathroom is over, there remains the most pleasant stage of arrangement of the room - the choice of furniture and accessories. Interior items, created with their own hands, make the house really comfortable. Only homemade things can be fully considered unique.

And, if not everyone can make a cabinet or a chest of drawers for a bathroom by himself, then anyone can construct an unusual decoration for the house from hand-made materials. Surely you have old, irrelevant, but still favorite things that you're sorry to throw away. We suggest you give these things a second life, a little work on them. In this article, we will tell you how to make an original and stylish bathroom accessory from an old mirror.

Making the mirror waterproof

All furniture and decorations that are purchased for the bathroom must meet one main requirement - to be moisture-resistant. In this room, the "climatic conditions" differ significantly from all other rooms of the house: here there is constantly high humidity, there are temperature fluctuations, and all items of furniture come into contact with water and steam.

Condensation that forms on the surface of furniture and accessories will not cause them harm if the interior items have a coating that protects them from moisture. It is recommended to buy mirrors for the bathroom, the surface of which is treated with a special compound that retains the mirror coating in its original state. Such mirrors are much more expensive than usual mirrors and it is impossible to achieve such an effect at home. But you can protect the frame and the back side of the mirror from moisture. To do this, you should treat the surface several times with water-resistant paint or varnish.

The decor with your own hands

The easiest way to update an old mirror is to decorate it with various decorative elements. You can decorate both the frame and the mirror cloth itself. You can decorate your mirror in any style you like, using various arts and crafts techniques, from the most basic to the most complicated.

Handmade materials

To decorate the mirror in the bathroom, you should choose decorative elements that are not afraid of moisture. These can be beads, buttons, old costume jewelry, rhinestones, waterproof stickers, etc. You can probably find all of these things in your craft box. Glue for fakes should be chosen, depending on the material, the main thing is that it does not lose its qualities from constant contact with water.

In the bathroom looks harmoniously a mirror, decorated with jewelry, extracted from the depths of the sea. If we go on vacation, we often bring sea shells, corals and shells, which then gather dust on a shelf somewhere. All these curiosities from the sea are well tolerated by water and humid air. You can glue them with liquid nails or any other water-resistant adhesive.

Fabric frame

Pictures and photos inserted into soft textile frames look very interesting. Why not experiment and make such a frame for the mirror in the bathroom?

It is very important to choose the right material - it must be moisture-resistant, like the one used to sew bath curtains. The base for the frame can be made yourself (from plywood, laminate, chipboard, etc.). You will also need sintepon, glue, scissors, thread and needle.

First you need to cut out a kind of "cover" from the fabric, with which we will cover the frame. Then we cover the frame with glue and wrap it with synthetic veneer (the more layers of synthetic veneer you use, the bulkier the frame will be). Now the frame should be packed in a cover made of fabric. To make the product look complete, the outer edge of the fabric should be carefully stitched. The finished frame can be decorated with buttons, beads or flowers from fabric.

Decoupage

Decoupage is the decoration of things with the help of paper clippings. The image is cut out of paper, glued with PVA on the pre-painted surface and covered with varnish. Using decoupage technique you can decorate practically any piece of interior, and a mirror is not an exception. Start to master this technique with special decoupage cards. After a little practice you can start with the napkins, photos, magazines clippings and etc.

If you want to hang a mirror in the bathtub, decorated according to this technology, first cover it with several layers of waterproof varnish (ideally, 10-12 layers, but try to put at least 5).

Painting

Those who have at least a little skill in drawing will probably easily cope with the task of painting on the mirror. You can choose anything from landscapes and scenes to simple abstract drawings, depending on your artistic skills. It's best to paint with acrylics, since they're pretty tolerant of bathroom conditions.

In addition to paints you will need a palette for mixing, a set of brushes, outlines and varnish for the final coating. To create different textures, experts also use foam rubber sponge, cotton swabs, toothpicks and other improvised means.

Mosaic

The most common material for finishing floors and walls in the bathroom is ceramic tiles. From the remnants of tiles that remained after the repair, you can make an original frame for a mirror. The more different elements will be in the mosaic, the more spectacular it will be. So you can go to construction stores and collect there fragments of tile; also look spectacularly fragments of ceramic dishes, glass pebbles, shell beads.

The mosaic elements are glued on the mirror or on the frame, and the space between them is filled with a grout in tone. Choose a pattern based on the general style of the bathroom: it can be a simple geometry, floral ornaments or marine themes, or you can just scatter parts of the mosaic in an artistic mess.

Tips

How to hang a framed mirror on the wall even a child knows, but what to do if you decide to do without this element of decor? A mirror without a frame can be fixed to the wall with liquid nails, most importantly, apply enough adhesive composition so that it can withstand the weight of the mirror. You can also hang a mirror on the self-tapping screws fixed in the wall. True, to do this, you will have to take the mirror to a workshop to have holes drilled in it for fasteners.

In stores, they sell special wall mounts for mirrors. They are mounted to the wall so that they remain almost invisible, while at the same time securely holding the mirror. The mirror looks glued to the wall, but in fact it is firmly fixed to the holders.

And if you fix the mirror to the wall so that it is at the same level as the tiles, the effect will be amazing. So you can visually increase the space, and create the impression of an infinite bathroom. The main thing is not to frame the mirror in any way, let it "merge" with the wall.
